A stroke is a life threatening condition where the blood supply is cut off to the brain. There are three main signs of a stroke; one side of the face may drop; you may be unable to lift your arms or keep them their because of weakness or them being numb; and speech may be slurred and the person unable to talk.
If any of these signs are spotted, it is important that you act as quickly as possible.
The sooner a stroke is identified and treated, the better chance a person has of surviving and suffering fewer problems afterwards.
A failure by a doctor to diagnose stroke
In order to reduce the long term effects of a stroke, or to prevent someone from dying, it needs to be diagnosed quickly in order for the patient to start receiving treatment straight away. Where a doctor fails to diagnose a stroke, this can have severe and fatal consequences.
A doctor’s negligent behaviour can lead to compensation.
Some medications are known to increase the chance of a stroke and need to be monitored to ensure this does not happen. Where a doctor fails to do this and it leads to a potentially fatal stroke, this could lead to compensation from the doctor’s negligent behaviour.
Can I claim?
If you or a family member has suffered or sadly died from a stroke due to medical negligence, you may be able to claim for compensation. A stroke can affect someone physically, psychologically, and financially. If it was not recognised or diagnosed early enough, it can lead to a claim for compensation.
The physical effects of a stroke can be life changing and ultimately fatal. If it goes misdiagnosed or there is a delay at all, this can cause a person to become disabled or result in the patient’s death.
The financial impact that a stroke can have on a person’s life can be huge. A stroke will mean time off of work, with some people unable to return to work at all. This would result in a person suffering a loss of earnings – something they would be able to claim for.
The psychological effect a stroke can have on a person varies, but can be severe. A person may suffer memory loss, be unable to control their emotions, a possible change in personality, as well suffering from depression.
