Mian Munawar Shah – Walsall Manor Hospital surgeon suspended

Walsall Manor Hospital surgeon Mian Munawar Shah has reportedly been suspended as a result of concerns raised from an audit in February 2020. The issues raised reportedly identified that some operations he performed appeared to have a higher complication rate than would normally be expected.

As a result of the issues raised, some 600 people are understood to be having their medical notes assessed and their cases reviewed as part of a potential recall. Patients who could be affected are understood to have undergone shoulder surgery with Mian Munawar Shah, and there are concerns that people could have been adversely affected.

Recalls initiated

Some 600 people who have undergone shoulder surgery with Walsall Manor hospital surgeon Mian Munawar Shah are understood to be in the process of being contacted, although the process for doing so is expected to take a considerable amount of time.

The chief executive of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust has offered sincerest apologies to patients who may have been affected, and confirmed that they are contacting people to support them in any way they can. Cases are set to be thoroughly reviewed and, if there are concerns that patients may have been adversely affected by the Walsall Manor hospital surgeon’s practices, further investigatory work may need to be carried out.

If it transpires that anybody has suffered when they should not have done, they may require additional treatment or may potentially need additional surgery. However, given that the shoulder is a complex part of our body, any damage that might have been done could be difficult to resolve.
